Smudging

The smoke produced by burning herbs is used to cleanse and transform the energy of a space, or to clear the personal energy of yourself or another.  Smudging calls on the spirits of sacred plants (such as sage) to restore balance.  The powerful cleansing practice has been used by a variety of cultures for thousands of years, and is just as popular today to clear bacteria from the air, move stagnant energy and remove negativity from any space.

Tools for your smudging:

  • Your chosen smudge bundle
  • A fireproof dish or bowl to catch any ash or embers that may fall, and to put your smudge in when you are done.
  • A feather to fan the smoke
  • A lighter or candle to light your smudge

Suggestions on how to smudge

  • Open a window or door to allow all the unwanted energy to leave.
  • Light your smudge bundle and once you have a flame, gently blow it out so your bundle is smoldering, not burning.
  • When smudging your space, walk around each room, at a gentle pace, fanning the smoke with a feather, paying particular attention to the corners and behind doors. Hold your fireproof dish under your sage bundle to catch any ash or embers that fall.
  • Say a prayer or ‘speak your intention’ silently or out loud as you go. You could say something along the lines of “I ask the plant spirit of sage to please cleanse and clear this space of all negative energies on all levels, and fill with love and light”, whatever you feel comfortable with, there is no set thing you have to say, but it is important that you set your intention about what you are doing.
  • When smudging yourself or others, fan the smoke so that it touches all parts of you or them, focusing particularly on areas where you feel there are blockages of physical/emotional/psychic pain.
  • When smudging crystals or other items, pass them through the smoke.
  • When you have finished gently stub your smudge bundle out in sand or dirt and leave it outside until you are sure it is no longer burning, and then keep in a safe place.
